Biodegradable bags for electronic components

imageFarnell, the leading multi-channel distributor, has won the “Environmental Product/Service of the Year” award, for its biodegradable plastic bags.  The new packaging solution was implemented by Farnell in September 2009, to replace polythene packaging for an estimated 3.6 million orders despatched from the company’s European warehouses each year. Instead of polyethylene (PE), the new bags are made of PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol), a material soluble in water and . The new bags are supplied by fully biodegrade (EN13432) without releasing any harmful chemicals into the environment, while offering the same level of component protection as standard static dissipative bags. Recognising its suitability, the company patented and developed the product further in collaboration with packaging specialist Antistat (UK).
